NCLC/Thrivent Projects and Fund Raisers

Care in Congregations
New Creation Lutheran Church has up to $1300 available for congregational use each year. These funds are supplemental funds that are provided by Thrivent to support volunteer projects and/or fund raising activities that benefit NCLC or related Lutheran institutions. These funds supplemented our coffee donations and in turn provided the funds for the purchase of the digital and video cameras in 2006.

Goals for 2007 include a Harvest Hoedown auction sometime this fall to raise funds for youth and missionary scholarships to Nicaragua. We would like to have more ideas for additional projects and all suggestions are welcome.

Care Abounds in Communities
This program provides funding support for service activities and fund raisers that benefit individuals, families and qualified not-for-profit organizations other than congregations.

If you know of an individual who has experienced a loss due to health, or other catastrophic loss in their lives please contact the Thrivent Coordinators.

Simply Giving
Simply Giving is an automated giving program designed to help you conveniently and consistently contribute to NCLC. Your gifts are made through a pre-authorized withdrawal from your bank account or credit card. You determine the frequency and amount of your automatic gift is deposited in NCLC’s account. There is no cost to you or NCLC.

You benefit by making a systematic gift on the same day each week, month, or other option. Your gift will continue on a regular basis even when you are on vacation or cannot attend church on a particular Sunday. It’s a great budgeting tool designed just for you.

New Creation is not presently enrolled in the simply giving program. If this is of interest please contact one of the Thrivent coordinators.

Giving Plus Program
This will allow Thrivent members to increase their giving to a Lutheran organization such as Bible Camps, Schools, Colleges, and Lutheran Social Services. Thrivent will contribute $1.00 for every $2.00 you give up to $600 per organization.

Thrivent Builds
Thrivent has programs supporting local Habitat for Humanity builds. Thrivent Builds Worldwide also provides funds to assist members with travel expenses for builds worldwide. (Airfare is excluded).

Other
Thrivent provides medallions for baptisms, and recognizes confirmands with crosses.

A Brief History of Thrivent
At the turn of the 20th century life insurance was very expensive and affordable only to the very affluent. Many fraternal organizations were flourishing at that time. Providing a death benefit (insurance) is one of the requirements to be classified as a fraternal organization. This is still a requirement today. In reality insurance was only affordable to most people through these fraternal organizations. This presented a dilemma for Lutherans as most, if not all fraternal organizations held beliefs that were in conflict with their own.

Recognizing the need many Lutherans had for insurance to provide for their families in the event of a death, a group of men formed what became known as Aid Association for Lutherans. In addition to insurance it was a priority of this group to aid and support Lutheran churches and communities in a substantial way. AAL provided these benefits to Lutherans who were members of the Lutheran Church Missouri synod and later the Wisconsin synod.

Approximately 15 years later another group formed to provide similar benefits to Lutherans that eventually formed the ALC and LCA synods. This organization was known as Lutheran Brotherhood. At the time income tax was instituted the IRS gave AAL and LB a tax-exempt status because of the charitable work they were doing. AAL and LB grew side-by-side complimenting one another until the 1960’s when both groups opened their doors to all Lutherans regardless of synod. Then in 2002 AAL and LB merged to what we now know as Thrivent. Thrivent is now the largest fraternal insurance organization providing many millions in benefits through local chapters across the nation.
